701: Business Acumen: A Workshop for HR Departments of One

2021 Annual Conference & Expo
Attendees will learn the critical skill of business acumen and how it can be used by solo practitioners to ensure that the HR function supports core business goals and objectives.

This session will examine the behavioral competencies in the business cluster of the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge (SHRM BoCK) and how they apply to small businesses. Learn about each competency, hear real-life case studies of the competencies in practice, and discover practical ways to customize and implement the competencies in your HR job and throughout the workplace.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the three behavioral competencies within the SHRM BoCK business cluster: Business Acumen, Critical Evaluation and Consultation.
  • Learn real-life examples of each of the competencies.
  • Learn practical implementation tactics to use on the job.
  • Learn ideas for sharing the competencies with others in your organization via HR policies, procedures and programs.

Jennifer Currence is a Senior Partner of HR Soul consultancy firm in Tampa, Florida, where she delivers results through strategic HR solutions, customized training, and coaching programs for organizational and HR leaders. She is the creator of The SOTO Approach to Leadership and the content architect for the Society for Human Resource Management’s (SHRM) international People Manager Qualification (PMQ).

Jennifer is regularly published and featured in industry magazines, webinars, and podcasts, and is the author of three HR books on behavioral business competencies.

Jennifer was named one of the top 100 Influential HR professionals in Leadership and Development in 2023 and Tampa Bay’s HR Consultant of the Year in 2017.  She is a faculty member for SHRM and a former management professor at the University of Tampa.
